SG2 (SPG2, Super Gold 2) is a corrosion-resistant powder stainless steel with a fine-grained structure. Developed by the Japanese company Takefu in 1991 specifically for table and kitchen knives. It holds laminated coating well, as well as ceramic and non-stick coating. The manufacturer claims that the hardness of the steel is no more than 62 HRC. Other sources indicate an achievable hardness of 64 - 65 HRC.
Super Gold 2 (SPG2) is the highest quality blade steel created by the powder metallurgy method. Recent advances in steelmaking technology have made it possible to produce rapidly solidified steel powder by atomizing refined molten steel. Powder metallurgy is a method of steelmaking that uses powder as a raw material through processes such as pressing, sintering, forging and rolling. Compared to conventional remelted steel, blade steel made by the powder metallurgy method has no segregation and has a uniform fine structure, resulting in extremely superior fire forging and machinability. In addition, the powder metallurgy method allows the addition of a large amount of alloying elements that is not possible using the conventional smelting method, resulting in Super Gold 2, an ultra-high-quality blade steel with a composition that was previously unavailable. Super Gold 2 satisfies all four essential blade requirements:
- High hardness.
- High strength.
- Satisfactory abrasion resistance.
- Excellent corrosion resistance.
Super Gold 2 is also called "Powdered Stainless High Speed Steel" because it is the first high-quality blade that can be produced by powder metallurgy, and it has the characteristics and properties of high-speed steel converted into stainless steel. Due to its high-temperature hardness, Super Gold 2 does not degrade and maintains its characteristics even when coated with ceramic or fluoropolymer.

Why is SG2 (SPG2, Super Gold 2) so special?
- High hardness: due to its structure, SG2 can be hardened to a very high hardness, which ensures long-lasting sharpening.
- Corrosion resistance: like all stainless steel, SG2 resists corrosion well, making it ideal for use in the kitchen.
- Fine grain: the fine grain provides high strength and toughness, which allows the blade to withstand significant loads.
- Excellent cutting properties: the combination of high hardness and toughness provides excellent cutting properties.
Application of SG2 (SPG2, Super Gold 2)
- Knives: SG2 is most often used to produce high-end kitchen knives. It is ideal for cutting meat, vegetables and fruits.
- Tools: due to its properties, SG2 is also used to produce other cutting tools.
SG2 (SPG2, Super Gold 2) is a high-quality stainless steel from Takefu Special Steel Co., Ltd., which is used to produce the highest-class knives. It is characterized by high hardness, durability and excellent cutting properties. If you are looking for a knife that will serve you for many years, then SG2 is an excellent choice.
