AISI 309S | EN 1.4833 | DIN X12CrNi23-13 is an austenitic stainless steel that provides excellent corrosion resistance and heat resistance, as well as good strength at room temperature and at elevated levels. The grade is almost identical to the AISI 309 grade, except for the carbon content.
AISI 309S has a lower carbon content, which minimizes carbide precipitation and improves weldability. The steel is virtually non-magnetic after annealing and becomes slightly magnetic when cold worked.
This grade is characterized by good heat resistance and heat resistance. Intensive scale formation occurs at a temperature of 1050 °C. It should be noted that AISI 309 S steel is more resistant to the effects of the marine atmosphere than AISI 304 steel.
Corrosion resistance
The steel provides excellent overall corrosion resistance. It is more resistant to marine atmospheres than 304 steel. It is capable of demonstrating high resistance to sulphite solutions and can be used for handling nitric acid, nitric-sulphuric acid mixtures, as well as acetic, citric and lactic acids.
Applications
Due to its good ductility, excellent weldability and high resistance to acids and sulphite alkalis, AISI 309S stainless steel has found wide application in a variety of areas:
- in the chemical, oil and gas and mining industries;
- in metallurgy;
- in the production of various heating elements;
- for the manufacture of parts and structures designed to operate at elevated temperatures in a lightly loaded state (for example, stainless steel pipe: pipes for methane pyrolysis, pyrometric tubes);
- in the manufacture of parts of furnace conveyors and various furnace fittings;
- in the manufacture of boxes for cementation.

Technological properties
⓵ Welding
AISI 309S stainless steel belongs to a group of stainless alloys that have limited weldability. Although the austenitic class of stainless steels is generally considered suitable for welding by conventional fusion and resistance methods - special attention is required to compensate for the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to avoid warping and distortion.
⓶ Heat treatment
Annealing at 1038 - 1121 ℃, then quenching in water or rapid cooling in air. It is believed that the best corrosion resistance is achieved at an annealing temperature of - 1070 °C with the most rapid cooling.
