AISI 316LN | EN 1.4429 | DIN X2CrNiMoN17-13-3 is an austenitic CrNi-molybdenum stainless steel. It has high stability and extremely low permeability. Its nitrogen content provides some hardening, increasing the minimum specified yield strength compared to stainless steel type AISI 316L.
AISI 316LN | EN 1.4429 is slightly more resistant to corrosion than EN 1.4436, especially in chloride environments, due to the addition of nitrogen. It exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in most natural waters (urban, rural and industrial), even with moderate chloride and salt content. This grade of stainless steel is also resistant to corrosion in various acidic environments. Due to its low carbon content, EN 1.4429 is resistant to intergranular corrosion in both as-delivered and as-welded conditions.
The brand is not resistant to sea water.
Welding
The steel is easily welded using all welding processes. If a filler material is needed, an appropriate filler can be used. The maximum temperature between welding passes is 150 °C. No post-weld heat treatment is required.
Any tint or heat resulting from welding or high temperature processing must be either mechanically or chemically removed followed by passive treatment to restore the metal's corrosion resistance.
Forging
The working parts are usually preheated to a temperature of 1150 °C to 1200 °C, with forging taking place between 1200 °C and 900 °C. After forging, the component must be rapidly cooled in both air and water to avoid the formation of undesirable phases that could adversely affect corrosion and mechanical properties.
Processing
Due to the addition of nitrogen to the composition of the grade, the metal is more difficult to process than, for example, EN 1.4436 or EN 1.4435. In addition, the rapid strengthening and low thermal conductivity require the use of proper cooling and high-quality cutting/processing tools.
