Stainless Steel Grade AISI 405 | EN 1.4724 | DIN X10CrAlSi13

AISI 405 | EN 1.4724 | DIN X10CrAlSi13 is a ferritic stainless steel supplemented with aluminum. It is characterized by resistance to sulfur-containing gases. The steel is heat-resistant: resistant to temperatures of 950 °C in air. Due to the low chromium content, EN 1.4724 is not as resistant to high-temperature oxidation as EN 1.4742.

Low-alloy ferritic heat-resistant grade with improved resistance to scale formation. Not critical regarding brittleness at operating temperatures. Used, for example, for furnace equipment, components of thermal boilers, grates, burner nozzles, transport parts, thermowells.

AISI 405 is resistant to oxidation of sulfur-containing gases and demonstrates somewhat lower, but still good resistance to sulfur-containing gases in reducing environments. It demonstrates low resistance to carburizing gases, and is not resistant to high-temperature nitriding, oxygen galvanic decomposition. This steel grade is resistant to scaling in air up to 850 °C.

Welding

It is recommended to weld this grade of metal using all conventional welding processes with preheating to temperatures between 200 °C and 300 °C. Low heat inputs should be used during welding to reduce possible grain blockage effects. Although post weld heat treatment is not required, stress relieving at temperatures between 750 °C and 800 °C followed by air cooling is sometimes recommended. Use suitable filler materials when welding, if necessary.

Forging

Forging is usually done at 1150 °C - 800 °C, followed by rapid cooling in air or water. Forging is usually followed by heat treatment.

Mechanical processing

Ferritic stainless steel grade AISI 405 | EN 1.4724, like some other ferritic grades, tends to lubricate during machining, resulting in longer chips that make machining more difficult.
