Stainless Steel Grade AISI 306 | EN 1.4361 | DIN X1CrNiSi18-15-4

AISI 306 | EN 1.4361 | DIN X1CrNiSi18-15-4 is an austenitic stainless steel developed for primary forming into forged products. It is used for parts exposed to hot concentrated nitric or sulfuric acid. It is resistant to intercrystalline corrosion, which develops in very concentrated (over 90%) nitrogen environments up to the boiling point.

It also exhibits resistance to intercrystalline corrosion in the presence of oxidizing ions.

Welding

Weldable by all methods. We recommend TIG or MIG welding. Post-weld heat treatment is not required, but is recommended especially for heavy-duty applications. However, pickling is necessary, preceded by immediate passivation.

Application areas

- mineral chemistry: production of concentrated HNO3;
- organic chemistry: use of concentrated HNO3 (nitration);
- nuclear industry: evaporator operating in a nitrogen environment for concentration of melting products;
- metallurgical industry: tanks - equipment intended for nitrogen-sulfite mixtures;
- chemical industry: chromium sulfite mixtures, strongly oxidizing solutions.

AISI 306 | EN 1.4361 has a chemical composition adapted for work in the trans-passive zone. Excellent resistance to intercrystalline corrosion.

The alloy has ultra-high strength, excellent toughness and weldability. Typically, the material made from this steel is used in the aerospace industry, machinery and tools, as well as components and fasteners for ammunition.

Mechanical properties

The mechanical properties of AISI 306 stainless steel depend on the specific composition and manufacturing process of the alloy. However, in general, stainless steel has good mechanical properties, including high tensile strength, good yield strength, and good elongation.
- Tensile strength: minimum 540 MPa;
- Yield strength: minimum 240 MPa;
- Elongation: minimum 40%;
- Hardness: approximately 95 HRB (Rockwell B).
