AISI 384 | S38400 is an austenitic stainless steel designed for primary forming into forged products. One of the most widely used precipitation hardening grades in industry. Although the alloy is soft and ductile in the solution annealed condition, it is capable of acquiring high properties after a single precipitation or aging treatment.
Characterized by good corrosion resistance, high hardness, toughness and strength.
Density of steel = 8.0 g/cm³. Non-magnetic.
Machinability
Long sticky chips characterize the machinability of this alloy. It can be machined in an annealed condition. When machining under such conditions, it will be necessary to treat the parts with a solution after machining before final hardening.
Welding
This alloy, which is successfully welded by conventional fusion and resistance methods, should not be joined by oxyacetylene welding. If necessary, it is recommended to use filler metal.
Forging
Before forging, hold the material for 1 hour at 1177 °C. Do not work at temperatures below 1010 °C. Before final hardening, treatment with a solution after work is required.
