Ferritic stainless steel EN 1.4000 | AISI 403 / AISI 410S | DIN X6Cr13 with a small addition of aluminum minimizes the formation of austenite at high temperatures, thereby limiting the hardening ability of the alloy. The result is a soft, plastic state when the material is cooled sharply above the critical temperature.
EN 1.4000 steel has moderate resistance to atmospheric and neutral chloride corrosion. It is not recommended for applications where surface appearance is critical as it is susceptible to localised pitting. In the as-welded condition this material may be subject to sensitisation which may result in preferential attack of the grain boundaries in the heat affected zone. Like most 11-14% chromium alloys, in strongly acidic environments this grade of stainless steel can withstand uniform corrosive attack resulting in high corrosion rates.
Weldability
Generally weldable by conventional fusion and resistance methods. Special care is needed to avoid brittle weld cracks during fabrication by minimizing discontinuities, controlling weld heat input, and occasionally heating the part slightly before forming.
Formability
AISI 403 / 410S is used in structures requiring punching, bending, profiling and moderate drawing.
Heat treatment
AISI 403 / 410S | EN 1.4000 steel does not harden during heat treatment. It is annealed at 750 - 810 °C and then air cooled, mainly for cold working deformations. Care should be taken to avoid exposure to temperatures of 1100 °C or higher due to possible embrittlement effects.
