Stainless steel grade AISI 429 | EN 1.4001 | DIN X7Cr14 is a ferritic steel. It is also known as chromium steel UNS S42900. This steel has good corrosion resistance and its weldability is better than that of AISI 430. In fact, it is a modified version of AISI 430 (AISI 429 has slightly lower chromium content than AISI 430).
The steel is suitable for applications involving a fairly mild corrosive environment. It can be used as forged parts where strength is not a critical factor and where corrosive conditions so require, since it cannot be strengthened by heat treatment. At temperatures between 760 °C and 816 °C, parts should be uniformly heated, impregnated and air-cooled. To prevent embrittlement of the steel, soaking in the temperature range, especially around 474 °C to 482 °C, or slow cooling in this range should be avoided. This embrittlement is believed to be due to the precipitation of ferrite with a high chromium content. This alloy is successfully welded by shielding melting and resistance welding. Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended since carbon accumulation may occur. Filler metal grade AISI 430 can be used here, post-weld annealing is recommended.
Stainless steel grade AISI 429 is used in the manufacture of interior decoration and household appliances.
