Stainless Steel Grade AISI 630 | EN 1.4542 | DIN X5CrNiCuNb16-4

AISI 630 | EN 1.4542 | DIN X5CrNiCuNb16-4 is a hardenable martensitic stainless steel with high wear resistance, good corrosion resistance and high yield strength. Combining excellent mechanical properties and high corrosion resistance, AISI 630 can be used in marine environments, but it is susceptible to crevice corrosion in standing seawater.

Stainless steel grade AISI 630 EN 1.4542 | DIN X5CrNiCuNb16-4 is a martensitic stainless steel that has been precipitation hardened to achieve excellent mechanical properties. These steels achieve high strength and hardness after heat treatment. In terms of heat resistance and corrosion resistance, grade 630 is similar to AISI 304.

One of the key advantages of this grade is that it is available in solution-treated conditions, where it can be easily machined and aged to achieve high strength. The grade is aged at low temperatures to avoid significant distortion. Therefore, this grade is used for applications such as long shafts that do not require re-correcting after heat treatment.

Temperature of use

It can be used at temperatures up to 450 °C, but the steel is also suitable in the low temperature range (- 50 °C). At sub-zero temperatures, excellent impact toughness is maintained.

Processing

Stainless steel EN 1.4542 can be machined in the annealed and hardened condition, but the machinability depends on the hardness.

Welding

Can be welded by all conventional methods. Does not require preheating. Care must be taken in the design and welding of high strength steels to prevent welding stresses.
